Conversation with the CEO: How leadership and vision shape the future of a law firm

Ganna Voievodina, CEO of Manimama law firm, is a prime example of such a leader. Her many years of experience in the legal field, especially in the area of cryptocurrencies and financial technologies, allowed her to build a company that quickly gained the trust of clients and became a reliable partner for many companies. Today, in an interview with Ganna Voievodina, we have the unique opportunity to learn more about the path she has taken, the principles and values that guide her personal and business activities, and the corporate culture within Manimama.

What was the reason to set up a law firm?

First, it should be noted that Manimama has two co-founders who are professionals in their field – CEO Anna Voevodina and CBDO Vasyl Ponomarov.

Ganna Voievodina has several honors degrees in law and linguistics. In addition, Ganna is the author of the draft Law of Ukraine “On Virtual Assets”. For the past 6 years, she has been holding the position of key lawyer at crypto exchanges. These were such well-known companies as EXMO and KUNA. And she directly performed all the in-house tasks and drove the high-risk business forward. The expertise gained as the head of the legal department at KUNA allowed her to think about creating her own legal agency that would fully serve the cryptocurrency market.

Vasyl Ponomarov has been developing and gaining professionalism in the business sector for over 20 years. He has traded on the financial markets: in particular on the Betfair sports exchange, brokerage platforms, and cryptocurrency platforms. Vasyl is also an investor with experience in financing and managing more than ten successful projects in the real sector and financial markets. His success in trading and investing, as well as his in-depth knowledge of business management acquired over the years, led him to decide to set up a law firm, which would help other businessmen find the right service to help them make money safely.

At some point, Ganna and Vasyl decided to unite their skills and knowledge to create a new company combining both law and business. The logical conclusion of the story was the establishment of Manimama in 2019, which has become an undeniably successful project, helping modern innovative businesses to grow and develop under the law requirements.

What are the company’s main objectives in the legal market?

We offer comprehensive legal solutions for complex and non-standard businesses. First of all, our work is not just about legal engineering. We help to create a business model, adjusting it to make it cool.

Clients usually come to us with cases that other lawyers do not take on because they are non-standard, risky, and just incomprehensible to our colleagues. For us, on the contrary, this is a good opportunity to show that we can unravel a surprisingly complex situation. Our task is to help businesses, which sometimes do not even understand which legal act regulates their activities, to launch as soon as possible to start making money. We, on the other hand, ensure the legality of what is happening. That is why our mission is “We work so  you can work!”. We allow starting and developing to those who create something out of the box and have been rejected by others.

We work with those, who are on the verge of the permissible and the impermissible. We work with cryptocurrency projects that have existed for a decade without actual regulation and are currently entering the over-regulation stage and we do believe we are ready for these challenges.

What are the principles that you follow in your work?

First of all, we work with integrity, and I, as CEO, devote myself to each project and try to give the best I can. Secondly, we work honestly and confidentially. Our clients do not worry about the possibility of their data leakage, because even though we work for the entire cryptocurrency market, we have never had a case of transferring trade secrets from one client to another. In this area, we regularly upgrade our expertise, work with the best cases on the market, and use legal knowledge and experience that we can apply effectively where this is needed. This combines our professionalism with confidentiality and the principle of protecting the interests of each client.

In addition, we believe that our strong point is taking care of the team and the relationships we maintain within the team. We have a good team of professionals and amazing people, because we value everyone, and they respond in kind.

What values are most important in terms of team building?

When we build a team, we take the selection and fitting process very seriously. We have a qualified HR specialist who understands our company’s values and chooses the best candidates. 

In general, our team is made up of specialists at different levels:

The first and most important level is young and talented paralegals, whom we choose through our international internship program. We work with leading universities in Ukraine to find those who best match our vision of an ideal employee. The firm invests considerable time in their training, creating a new generation of researchers.

The second level is made up of middle and senior lawyers who are responsible for different areas and directly manage specific departments. We also have an extensive network of consultants across Europe – professionals with experience in various jurisdictions who help us solve complex problems. These include country-specific lawyers who support our clients in tax and corporate matters, as well as litigators.

When recruiting candidates at all levels, we focus on both professional and personal qualities. We prefer hard-working, conscientious, and positive people who are willing to develop and grow within our team.

How do you maintain and develop the corporate culture in your company?

While maintaining sufficient flexibility and a family atmosphere, many of our processes have clear rules. This applies to work, communication with customers, and the development of standards of behavior within the company. We provide our employees with educational courses, financial support, and, of course, healthy and comfortable surroundings, as many employees work remotely, especially in Ukraine.

In this difficult time, we are always together and have a common understanding of the goal we are striving for. We have an HR specialist who looks after the well-being of our employees and helps newcomers to adapt successfully.

Our team also includes an experienced corporate trainer. As well as providing training and helping to set up processes, he is always available for a one-to-one meeting to listen to the problems of each employee.

We are implementing a program to train future managers, as we are open to growth and welcome our employees’ desire to lead projects and teams. In this respect, we are very different from companies that often use external specialists in management positions, which can be uncomfortable for employees. If there are ambitious people in the team, colleagues who deserve attention, we are always ready to make an effort to develop them. At the same time, we are open to hiring people at all levels, so our culture is quite flexible in this regard.

What approaches and methods do you use to ensure a high level of customer service?

We are a result-oriented law firm offering a wide range of legal services to both individuals and businesses. We maintain a high level of integrity and a “Customer first” approach, applying our skills and knowledge. We continue to assist society to make this world a better place to live.

Each case is initially led directly by me as the company’s CEO, and is then passed on to one of the senior lawyers, with the entire team of a particular department already involved. This allows management to get to know each product and each client to provide the best possible service.

We are developing our technological services in the fields of trading, cryptocurrency exchange, and legal services. In the next few years, we aim to create our algorithmic trading project, increasing the amount of client funds under our management to $100 million.
