With a Touch of Humor: Manimama Lawyers about Their Daily Life, Challenges, and Superpowers

Being a lawyer means constantly balancing the seriousness of the law with the unexpected twists life throws your way. But what does this profession look like from the inside? Do lawyers only write contracts and attend court hearings?

We decided to ask the team at Manimama Law Firm how they respond to stereotypical questions about their profession, and what superpowers they’d love to have to make their work even more effective. Get ready to laugh with us because their answers are about law and life with a sense of humor.

What is the most absurd or funny question you have ever been asked about your job as a lawyer, and how did you answer it?

One of the funniest questions I have ever heard in my legal career was, “Do you know all the laws in the world?” At first, I explained that lawyers do not need to memorize everything. The key is understanding where to find the right information, how to apply it correctly, and how to find solutions in any situation.

But over time, serious answers stopped working. It seemed like people expected us to have superhuman abilities. So, I had to come up with a new approach. Now, I jokingly say, “Yes, when we graduate, they implant a flash drive in our brains with all the world’s regulations. It’s a standard procedure for lawyers!”

The reaction? Everyone laughs, and the conversation instantly lightens up. As they say, you get the answer you deserve based on the question. (Taras Kaliandruk, Lawyer)

How do you explain your work to people who think lawyers only write documents and go to court?

Many people have the impression that a lawyer is primarily someone who writes documents and constantly goes to court. But in reality, our work is much more than just paperwork and courtroom processes. I always explain that the legal profession is like an iceberg. Others see just the small tip: courts, contracts, consultations. But the real work is hidden beneath the surface.

This includes analysis, strategy, negotiations, risk assessment, and most importantly, finding solutions that help clients avoid problems before they arise. I like to say that we focus more on prevention. So, lawyers are not just those who find solutions in difficult cases; we’re the ones who help avoid tough situations right from the planning stage. (Artem Shapoval, Senior Lawyer)

How would you describe your working day in one sentence from a movie?

I’d probably go with Hagrid’s words from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone: “You’re a wizard, Harry.” Of course, it’s not about magic, but sometimes what we do feels like magicians. From solving complex legal puzzles to finding solutions that even surprise us – it’s like little miracles, only without the robes and wands. So yes, sometimes our job is real magic! (Taras Kaliandruk, Lawyer)

As for me, the phrase that best describes my working day would be: “Do everything as if you have no room for error because, in our line of work, there isn’t.” Yes, that’s Harvey Specter from Suits. And honestly, in our profession, there’s no room for mistakes. Every step must be precise and well-thought-out, just like in the show, where every detail matters. (Artem Shapoval, Senior Lawyer)

What superpower would you like to have in your work and why?

If I could choose a superpower for my job, it would be a perfect photographic memory. I’m talking about something like Mike Ross from Suits — where he glances at a document or a book, understands everything, and never forgets. Imagine how much time you could save if you didn’t have to constantly review old cases or learn new laws from scratch! It would be like having your database in your head – perfect for a lawyer, right? (Taras Kalіandruk, Lawyer)

What do you think is the biggest challenge in a lawyer’s work?

The biggest challenge in a lawyer’s work? Balancing tight deadlines, high client expectations, and trying to drink your coffee while it’s still warm. Also, considering how quickly our field evolves, we have to constantly learn new things. So, if you can find time for a hot cup of coffee and keep up with changes in the legal landscape — you’re definitely in the right place! (Artem Shapoval, Senior Lawyer)

A lawyer’s job is truly an art that requires great skill and a bit of “magic”!
